The Good and Beautiful God by James Bryan Smith is a must read the first time and a continued read throughout life.

I first read this book and participated in a small group study about five years ago.  Since then, I lead a small group using The Good and Beautiful God.

Currently I am co-leading another small group through this book.

I have also led 2 different children’s ministry through KABOOM!  Discovering Who God Is by River’s Edge Curriculum which also aligns with Good and Beautiful God!  I still use the 9 characteristics of God from the KABOOM! material in our KidFaith classes (preparation for baptism).

All of that to say…

I am reminded about how good and beautiful God truly is.

Be alert for false narratives about God that want to creep back in.

As I re-read this book, I can also see how I have grown in my spiritual life.

I need to read

The Good and Beautiful God,

The Good and Beautiful Life, and

The Good and Beautiful Community

frequently.

I need to share this book series with others.

Happy reading!

Share your The Good and Beautiful God experience with others.

Mark 4:35-41 (CEV)

A Storm

35 That evening, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the east side.” 36 So they left the crowd, and his disciples started across the lake with him in the boat. Some other boats followed along. 37 Suddenly a windstorm struck the lake. Waves started splashing into the boat, and it was about to sink.

38 Jesus was in the back of the boat with his head on a pillow, and he was asleep. His disciples woke him and said, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re about to drown?”

39 Jesus got up and ordered the wind and the waves to be quiet. The wind stopped, and everything was calm.

40 Jesus asked his disciples, “Why were you afraid? Don’t you have any faith?”

41 Now they were more afraid than ever and said to each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

The disciples are getting to know Jesus. They know him as

Rabbi – They accepted the call to be in his teaching group or small group, actually living together group.

Healer – They have observed the miracles of healing that Jesus has performed.

Authority – They have observed the religious leaders response to Jesus.

Teacher to Masses – They have observed him teach to the crowds.

In this passage, the disciples experience a new Jesus scenario.

The storm comes. The winds and waves are ferocious.

Jesus is asleep.

The disciples make Jesus aware of the storm, and their imminent demise.

Jesus calms the wind and the waves.

Suddenly the storm on the outside is now on the inside of the disciples.

DISRUPTION!

Their lives have been disrupted by this new Jesus. Jesus has changed everything about who he is. Now the disciples are more afraid and are asking, “Who is this?”

What does Jesus do that inspires awe and maybe fear in our lives?

What does Jesus ask us to do that inspires awe and maybe fear?

He needs your fearless obedience.”

I was reminded of this song today and my friend and boss Pat Duncan who used to sing it.  He lived it.  Thanks Pat for all the lessons you taught me about God’s mercy and faithfulness.

He’s Been Faithful

by Vicki Yohe

In my moments of fear

through every pain and every tear

There’s a God whose been faithful to me.

when my strength was all gone

And when my heart had no song

Still He was faithful to me.

Every word He promised is true.

And what I thought was impossible

I see my God do.

He’s been faithful, faithful to me.

Looking back, Your love and mercy I see.

In my heart, I questioned your will

and I failed to believe

But You’ve been faithful, faithful to me.

When my heart looked away

The many times that I could not pray

Still in love my God, He proved faithful to me.

The days I spent selfishly, reaching out for what pleased me

Still in love You proved faithful to me.

Every time I go back to Him

Don’t you know, He’s waiting with open arms

and I see once again.

He’s been faithful, faithful to me.

Looking back, Your love and mercy I see

Many times in my life, Lord, I questioned your will

And I failed to believe

But You’ve been faithful, faithful to me.

17 The LORD your God is with you,
the Mighty Warrior who saves.
He will take great delight in you;
in his love he will no longer rebuke you,
but will rejoice over you with singing.”

Zephaniah 3:17

We talked about this verse this week.  It reminded me of this song.  What does God’s voice sound like when he sings over me?  Does it sound different when he sings over you?

Angels Wish – performed by Steven Curtis Chapman

Was God smiling when He spoke the word and made the world?
And did He cry about the flood?
What does God’s voice sound like when He sings, when He’s angry?
These are just a few things that the angels have on me

Well, I can’t fly at least not yet
I’ve got no halo on my head
And I can’t even start to picture heaven’s beauty
But I’ve been shown the Savior’s love
The Grace of God has raised me up
To show me things the angels long to look into
And I know things the Angels only wish they knew

I have seen the dark and desperate place where sin will take you
I’ve felt loneliness and shame
And I have watched the blinding light of grace
Come breaking through with a sweetness only tasted
By the forgiven and redeemed

And someday I’ll sit down with my angel friends
Up in heaven
And they’ll tell me about Creation
And I’ll tell them a story of Grace

Well, I can’t fly at least not yet
I’ve got no halo on my head
And I can’t even start to picture heaven’s beauty
But I’ve been shown a Savior’s love
The Grace of God has raised me up
To show me things the angels long to look into
And I know things the Angels only wish they knew
