Last night my hometown of Seymour, Indiana resurrected an old tradition of cruisin’ as I knew it or Scoop the Loop as others remember it. It consisted of driving up and down Chestnut Street in downtown Seymour. If you didn’t have anything to do over the weekend, you usually made your way downtown for a lap or two and for some many more.
In the early 2000s, cruisin’ Seymour died out as complaints from downtown residents brought out law enforcement.
Now in 2011 for one night only, people once again cruised downtown Seymour. Of course, they graduated from high school in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and even 2000s bringing their kids and their grandchildren to experience a Seymour tradition. There were hundreds of people in attendance, driving some amazing vehicles, and having a great time reliving the past.
How did Seymour get cruisin’ again? Social media. These savvy Scoop the Loopers and cruisers became part of the Facebook group “If you grew up in Jackson County” and the rest they say is history.
Plans are being made for the next Scoop the Loop event. I think I will find someone with an amazing vehicle to Scoop the Loop in Seymour. It sounds like fun!
I did wonder how many of them recognized those who haven’t been to Seymour recently.
It was hard to recognize anyone if you haven’t been in town for awhile! But fun nonetheless. Got to hang out with a couple of girlfriends from high school & that made it worthwhile. 🙂
